6 Skills A Baker Should Possess

by NADERA Kasim

We’ve all been there, covered in dust and sugar worrying about how to make it in time for that huge cake order you have tomorrow morning. In the beginning it can be hard to set an effective process of buying, making, and delivery of your goods. I have established a great list of skills that I’d love to share with my readers in hopes to get you motivated for having a better knowledge on what it means to be a productive baker.

  1. Organization

The most successful bakers understand how vital the process of baking requires careful timing and planning. Having your baking station prepared with everything you’ll need for that item including all the tools and pre-measured ingredients close at hand is important. In the industry, this is called “mise en place.”

  1. Communication

It’s important to have a great platform where you communicate with your clients. I like to go over my emails and ensure I am not missing out on any details in the order form. I also take time to see if I have any questions to help them further.

  1. Attention to Detail

Baking is a science that relies on precise measurements and temperature conditions. All ingredients must be weighed and measured accurately. A few extra grams or an oven that’s 20 degrees hotter than the recipe dictates and your baking will suffer. The best bakers in the world have a keen eye for detail while creating consistent pastry art and baked goods.

  1. Composure Under Pressure

Things can heat up in your kitchen, and not just because the oven is firing at 500 degrees! Bakers need to stay calm and collected under pressure. Set a schedule and allow yourself some wiggle room for miscellaneous tasks that arise. Keeping a clear head helps you prepare for the coming week, as well. Planning is an important aspect of good kitchen management, no matter what role you’re playing.

  1. Curiosity and Creativity

Baking is an interesting combination of science and art. The best bakers in the world consistently create new crowd-pleasing pastries, as well as time-honored favorites.

It’s important to have something creative that defines your special touch. Don’t be afraid to try new things!

  1. Patience and Dedication

Lastly, Baking is a well-planned process and every step is important. Some of the most important steps are also the most time-consuming sometimes so it’s important to have that schedule in place that allows you any wait time required for your dough to rise and or buttercream to turn out just perfect.
